This datation derives from the widely accepted identification of the character with Jacopo Marcello, who was "capitano generale" of the Venetian Republic in those years. Other proposed identifications are those with Bartolomeo Colleoni of Bergamo, Vittore Pavoni and Bartolomeo d'Alviano. Each of these identifications has led to different chronological placings, ranging from 1475 to after 1500. In spite of a quality that is still plastic and in relief, it seems plausible to date the portrait to the late 1490s. The face, in fact, despite its intense bony features, is not rendered with sharp planes, but softened and furrowed by attenuated lines. Neither is the mantle any longer defined in a synthetic and hyper-realistic way by folds that are pure volume as was the case around the 1480s.
